I've only seen his more recent programmes and a few repeats of his classic stuff but I always liked him. It was usually simple but tasty sounding food. Completely unfussy, too, just chop a bit of this, add a glug of that, and make sure the wine you're putting into your food tastes nice beforehand.
Reading about his later years really made me sad. :o(
