Mind you, add the private conversations and you get 78% of twits being of no interest.

It really depends.
Most of the people I follow use it as a proper microblog or a quick way of passing on links.
I also have three friends who don't use anything but twitter so it's good to see what they are up to.

Isn't that exactly the same as Facebook though. I'd say that most of the status updates are of no relevance to anyone. *shrugs*
