The "anti-stab" knife
Soooo stupid. All you need to do is grind the extra bit off...

If you have a grinder, you can put an edge on a bedspring. This is designed to prevent domestic 'and then I grabbed the knife, your honour' incidents becoming fatal.

Hmmm, I don't think those kinds of crimes are the majority of the problem.

It depends how you define the problem. I think that they must be what this knife is aimed at (no pun intended), because unless you outlaw and confiscate all other kinds of knife, the obvious solution for a wannabe stabber is just to buy a different sort of knife in the first place, or use a sharpened [screwdriver].

As for whether chefs would use them, I think that dismissing it out of hand is unproductive; you don't know how good a kitchen knife it would be till you've tried it. Although I am quite sure that some chefs would have fits of apoplexy if they had to use any knives other than their own personal set that they've been lovingly using since they made their first ham sandwich.

That said, I will admit that I am extremely dubious about them myself, more because slashing can be quite as lethal as stabbing than because of angle-grinders. The risk-averse might buy them, and they might prevent a few accidents. I think that's about the limit though.

ISTR that a lot of knives that are being confiscated these days are kitchen knives, as others are getting harder to get hold of.

It's a nice idea but it'll still happily slash. And yup, just a grinder to get the tip back.

Exactly. Also, show me the cook who would use such a thing.

Reminds me of a Sushi Knife. I'd use it, but you need that sharp tip and slim blade with a lot of stuff so....

It's a start, and I'm not gonna slag it off, but some people are just a-holes. I can imagine it being great for avoiding accidents though.

Same thought had crossed my mind.

at risk of sounding like your random axe-murderer, slashing is'nt nearly as effective in causing fatal injury.

what it does is creates larger wounds, but which are generally superficial, covering a wide surface area and causing damage without being easily fatal.

in contrast, stabbing wounds tend to puncture deeper, and cause considerably more complex damage, particularly in body impacts. a slash over the chest causes muscle and tissue damage, while a stab in the same area can peirce organs.

so in htat respect if knife crime cant be avoided, what they want is to move people to be doing slashing, rather than stabbing.

(and if you're backing away wondering why this psycho knows so much, I study rapier and longsword duelling, including the medical effects of both :) )

True, but if you're serious about it, you'd go for the neck or abdomen wouldn't you?

I know this already. Ex-reenactor.

My point is a slash to the neck or throat is obviously bad news. And most muggings with knives aren't fatal yet still mess you up good and proper in many ways.

Personally I like the idea, but as I've said in another post it's easy enough to convert them and in cooking that sharp point for filleting is always going to be needed. Safety thingy sure for accidents, but deliberate intent means get a different knife.

Why invent this when cleavers exist? They have no point and having watched some top chefs doing demo's are perfectly good for most things, obviously paring and boning knives you'd still want, but you'd not want the blunt end for those either.

But while the stabber is standing there grinding bits off the knife so they can stab somebody, they have time to think "But maybe I'll get arrested for murder if I stab somebody" and stop.

Stops something being so instantly available....You can create almost anything, but that then shows an active desire to do harm.

A kitchen knife should be a tool, not a weapon.

And so should a hand, a two-by-four, a screwdriver, a bottle, an iron, a lamp, a spoon, a fork, Tabasco sauce, and a dustbuster.

"Weapon" is in the mind of the user of the tool in question. Anything has the potential to be a weapon. Personally, I prefer my tools to be well-designed and easily used for their original purpose - Which this, as any cook will tell you, is not.

Oh indeed.

Any good cook will know how to use a knife properly and respect the tool. Mine have pride of place on a magnetic rack in my kitchen. I bet its rare a decent chefs knife gets used as a weapon.

However for the micromeal generation, i see a valid purpose.

The sharp point of a kitchen knife is there for a purpose; I can't imagine paring a complex shape with one of these or prying open shellfish with one. It isn't that I don't care that people get stabbed, but my kitchen knives are tools with specific shapes for specific jobs, and I see no need to change them.

How soon before we ban screw drivers? After all, you can stab someone with a screw driver!

Tackling symptoms instead of causes seems to be de rigeur these days.
Totally pointless, it will not stop a significant amount of anything.

No, no... not totally pointless. There's a little one under the rounded bit, see? ;-)

(Sorry, the voices made me say it).

Yeah or buy a different knife. Or a screwdriver. It's not like the world has a shortage of stabbing weapons. Stupid.
