"egg jarping is springing up all over the world"? We've been doing this for generations as well. I have no idea how old the tradition is in Germany (or at least the part I'm from) but I was taught this by my grandparents when I was little so it's definitely not something new outside County Durham. Please do some research before making claims.

On the subject, what are your (or your famliy's) (odd) Easter traditions involving eggs? We also play "Huchern", i.e. throw hard-boiled, dyed eggs as high up as possible and whose egg breaks is the loser. This is usually played in the garden or a big grassy field where there are no hard surfaces otherwise this would be rather silly.

Being a county Durham boy, I'm familiar with egg knocking (or jarping). Doesn't seem to exist outside of the North East within the UK.

It definitely does in my part of Germany so it's not just a NE England phenomenon and we certainly didn't import it. I guess it's just one of those things people come up with when they're bored.

I should think that similar games involving eggs would have developed all over the place. Hardly surprising.

My parents were brought up in the northeast but the only thing I can remember them saying about Easter traditions is pace eggs. That's where you hardboil and decorate your egg, then a bunch of people gather at the top of a hill and roll the eggs down the slope.
