I like Brian Cox. He's like a male version of Alice Roberts.

Yes! Well said. He makes emo hair look good.

Also because that he manages to bring really complicated scientific concepts across in an easily accessible manner.

This is not entirely unexpected as he was a pop star.

Give me Alice any time....

I'm never quite sure about Brian, he spends far too much time being the "I don't know this stuff, you explain it to me", when he is actually a world expert at it. I feel talked down to, which I don't with AR in the same circumstances.

I hadn't quite crystallised it into those words, but I agree!

He *is* the male equivalent of Alice (or perhaps someone on Coast!) but yes, he does indeed do the "so you're saying the Sun can provide the energy we need, but can you tell me what 'The Sun' is?" -

Horizon has been rubbish for the last few years, far too little science and far too much padding to make 15 minutes of interesting material fill an hour ... but I think Brian does a better job of science than any of the pre-Brian Horizon programmes ...

... I don't know whether aiming "popular science" programmes down to the level that is patronising/slow to those of us who actually enjoy science is a good thing ... are enough "non-scientists" watching and getting enthused/educated to make up for boring/annoying the rest of us who want to watch the latest on, say, fusion research (I wrote a term paper for junior high in 1977 on plasma and magnetic containment vessels ... thirty plus years later and we're still talking about commercial versions being ten to forty years away ... sigh)

His enthusiasm comes through, and I agree, he probably is their current best.

On the last program, there he is climbing through the various reactors, without any serious attempt to explain the structures, or why it's taking so long (beyond research funding)

You're right, nothing about magnetic containment fields/"bottles", magneto-hydro-dynamics, or why it has taken from 1945 (H-bomb) to 2009 and still we're a reasonable distance away from producing friendly energy from fusion.

I think finding the right level of science for these kind of programmes or rather which target group to aim for is very tricky indeed.

I think it's good, if all scientists watching do what I do and send the link to their non-scientist friends with the comment "look at this cool stuff".

I'd never thought of him that way before but, yes, you're right!

His constant grinning does irritate me a bit but, yes, he is good at what he does.
