Stupid question about Virgin Media

karohemdI only switched to the digital box end of last year and because most of what I want to see is either repeated or watchable/downloadable on one of the on demand players, I haven't needed to record anything.
The analogue box had a timer you could set in advance but the digital one doesn't seem to have one. How do you program it so you can record something that's on a few days ahead (the TV Guide only contains programmes about 20 hours ahead)?
Don't tell me to get a V+ box, the extra expense wouldn't be worth it.
