In the Daily Mini Quiz, most people don't know what an Emperor Penguin looks like. To get it consistently wrong is quite impressive. I'd have expected an about 50/50 distribution between the two similar ones but the percentage of the completely different penguin and the similar one are almost identical. Showing the head is enough as the major difference (apart from size) is the beak. (Hint: it's not the one in my icon, that's an Adelie).

I got it wrong too. I knew damn well it wasn't number 2, but I was surprised that the split was so heavily in favour of the King penguin. The beaks look rather similar to me, I was going on the yellow pattern behind the head, and getting it wrong.

Same surprise here. I remember that the King has the longer, more slender and pointy beak, I could never remember which has which pattern.

I only saw brushtails (gentoo, adelie and chinstrap) in Antarctica and Magellans in Chile. Next time I'm taking the side trips to South Georgia and the Falklands. ;o)

I got it wrong. Like most people I picked the first one.

I suspect it's also partly that the emperor penguin is photographed from above, with background visible, it makes it appear a lot smaller than they are, while the king penguin looks much bigger, as it looks like there's skyline behind...

It doesn't help that the third photo is largely concealed by the number 3. And if you look on wiki, it seems that the BBC may have got it wrong.

King

Emperor

No 3 is still the emperor on the BBC page but it could have been a clearer picture. Putting Kings and Emperors in the same small selection would be evil, even with clearer pictures like the ones you posted.
