Actually, I thought today's episode was quite unfair and it wasn't even a challenge episode.
No, I lied, the manoir has a full veggie menu. Impressive.
If I were a veg/vegan, I'd look at a restaurant's menu before even thinking of going there. If their normal menu had very little choice, I wouldn't say "Oh, let's go and see what they can rustle up for us".

The more specific dietary requirements were OK because there are relatively easy ways around them.

I happened to see it for the first time tonight. Found myself wishing that in the exit interview, the guy who had the problem with the vegans had just said "You know what? Fuck 'em. We're not a vegan restaurant, and if they are going to be so bloody picky they should expect to eat cabbage, or else sod off somewhere that caters for them!".

Probably that would have gone down like a cup of cold sick, but I'd still love to have seen it!

I always thought the original "Masterchef" should have included a random issue - eg "you now have an extra guest, a gluten-allergic british fruitarian, who is toying with the atkins diet; include them" - half way through the cooking.

That would be brilliant! I'd watch that!

Or "The back of your apron is now on fire."

I wouldn't say "Oh, let's go and see what they can rustle up for us".

Absolutely -- any veg / vegan who did try that would have to soon get used to disappointment.

The Manoir is really pretty unusual among top-end restaurants in catering well for veggies.

That was quite evil last night - although at least they did not get the rowdy variety. I am warming to the male odd couple I have to say.

To be honest, I would welcome more veggie choices generally across restaurants and not just a goat's cheese and mushroom or spinach tart which seems to be the default but as I said, as a veggie I wouldn't go somewhere that doesn't offer a good choice on their menu.

Yeah, they seemed to be able to get their act together last night, at least better than usual.
Cooking at the Manoir tonight, that's going to be interesting.

Yes, I'd noticed that. Why is it always goat's cheese on these things? It's not like there's a lack of choice in the world of cheeses, and seems strange default setting!

Sometimes one is dragged to one of these places by meat eaters...

I think the whole concept of Masterchef should be swapped for Mastercook: "You have to cook a meal with what's in the fridge plus what's stocked by the corner shop, for 4 people, one of whom is vegetarian and has to be at karate club in two hours with the kit that's still in the washing machine, and one of whom claims to be allergic to vegetables. It would also be very helpful to use up the potatoes in the cupboard and the carrots in the fridge because they are about to go off, and remember tomatoes are difficult to clean off the carpet without leaving a stain. Also, there are no clean pans"

I could win that hands down.

Well, goat's cheese works well in that sort of dish because of its texture and flavour but there are many other options (as the veggie menu at the manoir shows). I guess one of the reasons for the tarts is that you can prepare them in advance and you don't have to keep a section of the kitchen just for veggie preparation.

Great Ghu, I'd swear from that that you live in my house, or at least share my kitchen!
