Am I the only one who thinks he isn't actually funny but really annoying? He can't act, either. He was the worst bit in Stardust and the trailer of Ghost Town I saw last night was less than awe inspiring.
You might call me a heathen but I never liked The Office, either.

You're not alone. He's so dull.

FINALLY SOMEONE AGREES WITH ME!

MAy I add to this, he was rubbish on the 11 O'clock show, The office was awful, his stand up is dire and everything else you said is true.

I don't know how this talentless sumg **** got so rich, I mean, his kids books with weird creatures in? is he taking the micky out of us?

I will not watch anything with him in (knowingly) as all I want to do I hit him, lots, with hammers.

I am a bit angry today, soz everyone (must stop commenting on LJs when I m in this mood..)

He's not funny. Instead he has an air of desperate, grating need to be liked that i end up just despising him.

I'm not a fan either so no, you're not alone.

Well humour is a very personal thing. One man's Oscar Wilde is another man's Benny Hill! :D

Personally, I really liked The Office and Extras, but it's all a matter of taste.

Very true.

I liked some of Extras (mainly the guest stars) but I could never get into the Office.

Is he another one of these comedians who appear on panel game shows and do this routine of saying something borderline offensive and usually sexual while pretending to be stupid and then sitting there looking around with an expression like a stunned hamster waiting for the audience to laugh? Or am I just mixing him up with all the others?

Date: 22/10/08 01:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] feanelwa.livejournal.com
Oh, he's from Reading. Now it makes sense.

Oi, all the people from Reading I know are very nice!

It's the ones you haven't met that are the problem.

I haven't seen him on panel shows, at least not often, but he turns up on Jonathan Ross a couple of times a year.
He did The Office and Extras, "played" the dodgy merchant in Stardust and looks like this (http://www.avclub.com/content/files/images/ricky-gervais.jpg).

While I thought the Office was extremely well observed, I found it painful to watch (I think it was meant to be), but I agree with everything else you said. Especially the bit about Stardust.

Agreeing also. Awful. I'm not a big fan of 'makes you cringe' humour anyway. I fast-forward through his bit in Stardust whenever I re-watch it; who on earth was dumb enough to think he had anything to add to such a lovely film?

I agree! The fashion for UK cringe humour just feels awkward and irritating.

Can't say I've ever understood his appeal, either.

Yes! Someone else agrees! I like The Office, but not due to him, and it's a cringe-worthy watch rather than a laugh-out-loud sort of experience.

I have no desire to see that Ghost Town film. I've seen the trailer a couple of times in the last week, and fail to see why anyone would go to see it after seeing that small clip (which seems to explain the whole film).

I don't think he can act either. He was awful in Night At The Museum, which I otherwise really enjoyed.

Glad to see I'm not alone in thinking he's over-rated and NOT FUNNY!

I am so relieved that so many people agree with me.
I haven't seen Night at the Museum because I don't like Ben Stiller so that would have been extra annoying for me.

Strangely, I don't like Ben Stiller either, but I really liked Night At The Museum. I guess it was enjoying seeing bad stuff happening to him, and empathising with the other characters.

I didn't even like his cameo in Spaced :)

It's pretty forgettable, but once again he plays a man I would like to punch.

It's something about every character he plays, or something about him ;)

I thought The Office was brilliant, but that was clearly a very personal project -- just how personal, is becoming more apparent with everything he's tried to do since ;-)

I know someone who's claim to "fame" is that he's peed over Ricky Gervais's car.

Irrelevance, thy name is Ua_Meruti it seems.

Anybody who's peeing somewhere that isn't the floor of the ladies' toilets is fine by me. Except, you know, in my living room, and places like that.

The office was OK in places; when the cringe humour revolved around him, it was mostly "what a tosser - if I had a boss like that, we'd all kill him". I also never understood how he got to be manager.

StarDust - they were taking the p*ss out of him - I know, let's get Ricky in and take away his voice - the audience will love that....

I think i'd rather have bowel surgery carried out by a tribe of blind cannibles than ever go and see anything ricky gervais does. The fact he appeared in the simpsons just reminded me of how much that show had slumped from it's once great hieghts. And to be fair on Reading ozzy, most of the people you know from reading weren't actually from there :D
