The latest Coen Brothers work is a giggle. It lives off its big name cast: John Malkovich, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Tilda Swinton and Frances McDormand (Marge from Fargo) who are all cast against type. Basically, all the characters are losers who end up being in the wrong place at the wrong time (several times) and nobody except the audience actually knows what's going on. It's a bit slow to start off as the characters are introduced but picks up soon.

A nice little, funny (both in laughing out loud and subtle ways) film, so much better than the pretentious drivel that was No Country for Old Men.

I wouldn't say that the actors were cast against type, not even Brad Pitt ("True Romance", anybody?), but you are spot on with the rest.

Except for "No Country for old men" being drivel, of course. :-P
It was a good year for westerns.

Well, they were certainly unusual. Clooney was slick in appearance but he usually isn't that hapless.

I was bored out of my head with NCFOM.

I am so glad to hear your last comment about No Country. I was starting to wonder if everyone else had seen a completely different film from me - the one I saw was so diabolically dull and self-involved that had I been in the cinema I'd have had to walk out. As it was, I used it for a comfortable nap on the sofa.

*nods* I didn't watch it in the cinema, only rented the DVD and just switched it off halfway through.
