I'm watching The Invasion of Time (or trying to watch without fits of giggles). Now I know where the Doctors' rather unusual ways of dressing comes from. The Doctors (especially 9 and 10) dress absolutely conservatively to the Gallifreyans. The customes range from uniforms which are a mishmash of various period Earth pieces to the downright ridiculous (think a mix between the costumes in Ming's court in the 80s film version of Flash Gordon and the Dune miniseries from a few years ago - the taller the hat the more important the wearer). One episode in, I still have no idea what's going on, either because I haven't seen enough Who to understand what they're on about or because it's meant that way.
At least I now know where [livejournal.com profile] borusa got his name from. ;o)

There is another option.

Ooh, I've got that on DVD but haven't watched it yet. We'd just had a run of watching Tom Baker stuff so we wanted to take a break from him.

I seem to remember it's not exactly one of the all-time greatest Who adventures, although I do remember enjoying the romp through the TARDIS later on...

So now you've watched what is probably a fairly representative sample of "Classic Who", what do you make of it? I mean you are still watching it, so I presume you like it, but I'd be interested to know the views of one coming to it afresh, without the Rose-Tinted Spectacles of Nostalgia worn by many of us.

I can't say I was blown away. It was all a bit disjointed plot-wise. The Doctor is brainwashed into tricking his home planet to lower its defenses by a bunch of aliens (who can basically travel anywhere along any electromagnetic signal but are stopped by such a mundane substance as lead), only to be replaced by the Sontarans (who are supposed to be this ultimate warring and conquering race but are a bit crap, really, with an easily exploited weak spot - a gap in their armour that basically says "Aim here").
I did like some of the internal intrigue, though.

I also came away with the conviction that the Gallifreyans (or at least its ruling elite) are far from being the nice and noble beings they are alleged to be.

Generally, from what I've seen, I can definitely see the appeal and I'm certain had I grown up with it, I would have loved it. Actually, I'm a bit sad because there hasn't been anything like this in Germany, at least nothing native. Sure, there have been kids' programmes that are now considered cult, especially the Christmas miniseries (Timm Thaler etc.) some of which had a mystery/fantasy/scifi element but nothing with the sort of continuity Dr Who has.
