I was trundling along on my PC when suddenly a barrage of IE (which I don't even use but is obviously installed on this XP machine) windows opened, filling the screen in a few seconds. For every window I closed, two new ones would open and killing the iexplore process wouldn't work, either. I couldn't get it to shut down properly, either so had to resort to the reset button...

Was your return key stuck?

nope It wouldn't explain IE popping up, anyway, as I don't use it.

IAWTC. Or spyware.

My siter had similar a few years back, every half hour or so a barrage of porn sites would open in new windows. Really annoying.

Run all the usual scans &c, just to be sure.

Latest update and scan had just finished half an hour or so earlier.

It was a yahoo messenger related URL in the IE window. Maybe I accidentally clicked on an update thing but that would have opened in Firefox...

Quite a few messengers can distribute virus type things now too.

it sounds like you were about to experience how people on the internets have sex!

Sounds like malware to me, especially if the URL was to do with any kind of messenger application. Bear in mind that virus scanners are only as good as they are up-to-date and to be 100% up-to-date 100% of the time would require violations of causality, which most software vendors are loath to engage in.

On the other hand, it may just be very poor quality messenger software trying to update itself and getting confused. It's not so unreasonable for software to choose to open its URL in a specific browser, since that means they only have to get it working in one browser, and who cares which browser an update page opens in anyway?
