Phelps becomes winningest Olympic athlete ever

Please, don't do this. Your language is corrupted enough. :o/

Cnn.com did that too yesterday, and I had the same rant as you.

Although I suggested that perhaps the cnn.com writers had been moonlighting doing LOLcats for icanhascheeseburger.com

It made my soul cry.

I read something on Monday about the swimsuits that selected athletes are using that allows them to shave seconds off their time. Dunno if Phelps was wearing them.

Still, it's an amazing achievement, regardless of the grammar in the articles reporting it.

That's the thing, Phelps doesn't even even wear the full bodysuit (IIRC, the fabric emulates snake skin) just thigh length shorts.

My dig was literally just at the headline.

"Winningest"? How fucking old are they, six? And they get paid WHAT?

"Your language is corrupted enough."

You're mixing tenses ;-)

is = present
corrupted = past
"corrupt" would be the present tense

Er, the language isn't corrupt (as, let's say a copper would be), it's corrupted (as in broken, deliberately altered etc.).

Corrupted is the past tense of corrupt, ie.
The English language has been corrupted
The English language is corrupt

I actually didn't mean to take it this far, was just commenting on it given the context :-)

The past participle can be used adjectivally like this with no problem at all.

* I have broken the glass; now the glass is broken.

* I have painted the fenc; now the fence is painted.

* I have corrupted the English language; now the English language is corrupted.

(Of course, it only works with some verbs.)

"winningest" makes perfect sense to me!

Me too, I don't have an issue with that. We accept the present participle as an adjective in eg "a living person", "a leading competitor" etc, even in "a winning smile", so why shouldn't it have a superlative form? OK it sounds a bit ugly, but we'll get used to it ;-)

You say corrupted, I say flexible ;-)

I saw that on CNN this morning before I left for work, and I cringed.
