Recent DVD roundup

It's probably because I haven't read the book or can't remember having seen The Omega Man (*hides from his hardcore SciFi friends*) but a few niggles aside (the scientific inaccuracies and the too weak/quick ending), I quite enjoyed the ride.
Eastern Promises
Quite scary, quite brutal, quite touching and a really impressive performance by Viggo Mortensen. Not a funny film but I had to giggle at the "Still not King" bit.
Blood Ties (TV series)
Sort of a mix of The Nightstalker, Buffy/Angel and similar "supernatural detective series". Vikky, the protagonist, is an ex-cop now private investigator who during her first case teams up with a vampire to solve a missing persons case involving demon summoning. Of course, it's simple, the usual adversaries (demons, mad Voodoo priests, a little girl with psychic powers etc.) but it's reasonably well done and the characters are interesting. Just one thing is a bit annoying: Vikky left the police because she suffers from an eye condition which causes night blindness and other problems but she seems to be perfectly capable of running around graveyards at night and other dimly lit areas. *shrugs* Good entertainment, though.

I like the series, too. But I really love those books.

Blood Ties is a Canadian series.
Sadly, we don't get the US Food Network over here. I saw a few Alton Brown shows when I was in the US and I really liked him.

On the plus side, it's more in keeping with the book and follows more of the plot that they hint at in the film. But on the negative, it's not keeping in enough with the book for the film title to make any sense. In that regard the original ending is better. I suspect they went with that one to cater for the interlectual levels of the American audience.
