A minute ago, two riderless horses were in the lead at the Grand National. Why do they keep running?

Instinct: Wild horses run to escape predators ~ you are with other horses & they run, so you run, and if you out run them then you arn't the one at the back with the predator.

Besides, these horses are bred for running, they live running. So they run.

I guess so. Maybe it's also a case of "I finally got this stupid weight off my back and I'm free!" ;o)

If that many great big stompy animals were running behind you at 50mph you would keep running too.

Partially herd instinct, and partially the fact that it's what they've been trained to do as racehorses.

I can blither on at great length about equines, if you like...
