Gary Gygax died today. (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] bibliogirl for mentioning it). The scary thing is, he was only a year older than my dad.

Not that I'm a big fan of his work but he did start the hobby without which I wouldn't have met many good friends and wouldn't have had some of the funniest and most memorable moments in my life.

About my take on it too; I think I'd have to say that our philosophies of gaming were pretty much polar opposites, but it's a great loss.

oh.

Whatever the faults of D&D (and IMO it got a lot more flak than it deserved, by virtue of being popular), it's still quite some achievement.

Plus, wasn't it Gygax who said "A good GM only rolls dice for the sound they make"? I always liked that.

*nods* Exactly. I never really got into D&D (in Germany you tend to start with DSA) but I played the odd session at cons. The system isn't that bad (any system can be overcome by roleplay) but it's the people who made it a bad experience for me (munchkins only out for dungeon crawling and hack&slay) so it put me off.

Yep, it's a cool quote.

:(

Although one of the first comments my RP friends have come up with is that he failed his saving throw :)

He has brought a lot of joy to a lot of lives.

Wow. The internal politics of the gaming world aside, this man was one of the greats and influenced me in so many subtle and insidious ways... I'd probably never have written a book if not for a love of roleplaying (writing is just GMing without time to get friends together), I'd probably never have read so much (his work instilled a love of legends and myths into me) and thus would never have educated myself or been educated enough to go to university, I'd probably have a far more limited set of friends (they may have been saner, sobrer and more socially adjusted but I love my freaky friends).

Cheers Gary.
