Stop it with the political correctness going too far already. What do you want to do next, ban the Muppets or pork recipes in books or cookery programs? You'd then have to ban everything that isn't kosher, too, oh and then all non-vegetarian foodstuffs because meat might offend vegetarians and so forth.

Totally agree. Since at the next Diversity course work send me on I am asking for a full list of all words I can say without causing offensive. Since fed up of it, and think it needs cut right back.

It might be nice if they actually asked some Muslims what they thought of it. You know, what with it being polite to consult people before making decisions on their behalf. They would almost certainly find that most Muslims would say something like "dude. We're not supposed to eat actual pigs. There's nothing that says we're not allowed to look at drawings of fictional pigs."

Except maybe without the "dude".

Exactly what I was thinking. The people who propose the ridiculous things are rarely the minority group who gets stigmatised by everybody else's reaction to them.

Yes....such actions can be counter-productive, making the assumption that Muslims are automatically intolerant of any aspects of Western society that they do not share.

I for one wouldn't want to be branded intolerant by someone who'd never even spoken to me.

In fact, I have seen the head of the Muslim Council actually come out and state that people are doing a great disservice to Muslims by just assuming they would take offense without asking the Council first. And in most cases, no, they would not be offended.

In fact not only asked some Muslims, but made sure they weren't asking career activists with completely unrepresentative views.

With pretty much any political issue there's a spectrum of different perspectives, but somehow whenever "causing offense" is the concern it's the person with the biggest chip on their shoulder who gets consulted.

Ah yes, much akin to those 'single issue groups' that blindly campaign for something without looking at the bigger picture. Such groups have a worrying influence in this country right now.

What about the bit on offending builders for stereotyping them as pigs and shoddy workmen?! I nearly laughed myself into a hernia!

It is absurd, and it is aggravating, and it is almost certainly counter-productive, but it's their problem. If I were up for an award in that competition, I would pull out of it in protest, and hold a press conference saying exactly why.
