Before the prequels, everybody thought Anakin Skywalker had been some kind, benevolent super-pilot (and also a little older) but since Episode II we know he was just an arrogant prat...

Did you not notice how optimistic Obi Wan always was? Despite everybody saying how bad an idea it was he kept going "No, it'll be great". Just because he said it, doesn't mean its true. :)

Yep, because to defeat Vader Luke had to believe in Anakin. Obi-Wan had to feed that belief.

Now that it's obvious George Lucas is a semi-literate Californian chucklehead, I think the wise course is to pay as little attention as possible to what anyone says in the Star Wars Sextilogy.

George was just making it all up as he went along.

I read it as he needs Luke's help to stop the Empire and if he can do that by bending the truth, well, thats what the Jedi seem good at.

Saying that though, just because he was an arrogant prat doesn't mean that he wasn't a good man before the Dark Side began to steal some measure of control over him.
