[Cambridge] student discount on trains?

To those in the know, if you have an international student ID, do you get a discount on all tickets (or specifically Cambridge-London) for a single journey (or rather a Travelcard) or do you need a Student Railcard? If the latter there would be no point for us as jupiter_jones will only be here for the weekend.

If you've got the student card, you can get a student railcard, which gives you the discount. I think you might even be lucky enough to get that discount right across the country, rather than just on certain networks.

Oh, and remember, you need to fill in a form, give them a photo or two and pay £20. You can do this online, but don't expect to get it done in the time before your train arrives.

It's only for a single journey so there would be no point buying a railcard.

You don't even need student ID, just proof of age, because it is a Young Person's (under 25) railcard.

My question was if can you get a discount on one ticket without having to buy a railcard, i.e. just by showing your Student ID? There's no point in spending £20 to save £3 or so.
