Shit
Fopp was the last great music shop you could browse and actually find interesting stuff in, now there's nothing left but pap. I just wish I lived closer to town and had more opportunities to shop there rather than online.
After Jays closed five (?) years ago (to be fair, he didn't go under, just retired after 30 years), Fopp seemed the only decent place left.

Of course, you do realise it's all [livejournal.com profile] puddingcat's fault?

Erm - except for the bit where the administrators are the people who fix problems and get the best possible result for everyone involved after *other people* have screwed up?

I will miss Fopp. Although I didn't go in there that much lately as 2 other record shops in Manchester also enjoy my custom.

Shame, I used to buy stuff occasionally in the Edinburgh branch.

But I suppose the real culprit is t'internet. Shops just can't compete with the prices, selection or convenienvce of buying online. And of course, CDs are on the way out anyway because of downloading. Progress marches on and all that.

It's a bit confusing; the news says that Fopp is in Administration - whech means EY are looking after it & trying to get it back on its feet - but Music Zone is in receivership (one step short of liquidation). Yet being shut down like this suggests the whole thing is being liquidated.

While they may well have lots of stock left, the running expenses of the shops & website might be too high; they'll possibly get more after costs by selling it off in bulk to competitors.

Yes, it's all the kiddies fault with their ipods. There will be a massive electrical storm one day and they will regret not having the CDs.

Crap, I bought quite a lot of stuff from their branch near my home. Have to keep an eye open for any closing down sales, but it's a shame.

High Street record stores are fast becoming a thing of the past. Gone are the days of spotty teenagers flicking through racks of 12 inch singles looking for bargains of limited editions printed in ridiculous numbers. Gone are the days of album, cassette or CD. Gone are the days of finding a bands older stuff for three or five quid in the same rack as their new album, and having a punt because it might be good. Gone are the days of running in to a fan of the same band buying something else, which puts you on to a lead for something else you'd like. Gone are the inky gig flyers for obscure bands by the cash till.

Oh, well. I suppose online music is 'convenient', whatever that even means.
