I just watched Laputa - Castle In The Sky, an older film ('87) but after Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away, it's my favourite. A big part of it is probably that it's very steampunky with its air fortresses, kites and other anachrotech and because the story and background aren't as terribly off-the-wall as usual.

I think that is the best one, in the sense of the most perfect summation of what they're about. Although I think my favourite would be Kiki's Delivery Service.

Mm, I saw Laputa for the first time just a few months ago. I think those early films are very interesting, to see Ghibli evolving its own voice -- Laputa shows it in the context of conventional steampunk anime, but you can already see that it's adding something different.

I love Laputa, especially the pirates :)
It was the first ever anime I saw, on ITV no less. They showed the original english dub way back in about '92.

Yeah, and then it got redubbed for 2002ish with James Van Der Beek and people, and it was a nightmare! Long live the original Japanese.

Thank the makers for subtitles.

Oh, regarding my other post, are you energy saving? ;o)

I'm working my way through their catalogue. Spirited away got my attention, and is my favorite so far, just so different from our usual mythos. Then I saw Howl's Moving Castle, which was fun and recently Nausicaa Valley Of The Wind, which was charming. I actually thought you meant that film when you said "steampunky" - I did like the odd mix of tech, so I look forward to seeing Castle in the Sky!
