Computer tech question

In preparation for the delivery of my shiny new monitor, I just bought a graphics card.
I'm currently running my existing monitor off the integrated motherboard graphics. After I've installed the card, do I need to do anything apart from swapping the monitor lead to the card or will it automatically recognise that the monitor is now connected to the card?

It *should* recognise the graphics card, depending on your motherboard.
If not, there are bios options to turn the onboard off.

It should just recognise the card, but be prepared to download updated drivers.

Yeah, I intend to look for updated drivers before I install the card.

You may have to install graphics card drivers, and possibly go into the bios to tell it to use the card rather than the on-board graphics. Doing this may free up some memory - but don't do that if you eventually plan to use more than one monitor simultaneously.

I have just enough space on my desk for one monitor, let alone two...
Thanks! The card can actuall run two monitors so even if I ever move somewhere bigger during the lifetime of my current PC setup, that'll be fine.

As people have said most motherboards will take a graphics card as priority to the onboard graphics as primary display driver. If it doesn't then the bios will have a setting for which to use in preference. You shouldn't *need* drivers or anything like that to get it to work but it is of course usually worthwhile to make sure you have the latest drivers installed.
