The largest number of comments you can have on one post is 5000. A while back there were a bunch of people having a race to see who could hit it first. I forget who was involved and who won, but at least three of them got their post up to 5000 comments, then LJ locks it so no more can be made.

Impossible to read them all and make any kind of sense of it...

Think the best I've had on one single post is a little over 120. :)
