D80 - First impressions
4 Oct 2006 02:42 pmAs I said earlier, it feels nice and solid, despite being plastic. The buttons are all in the right places, although some have moved around a bit from the D70 but that's not much of a problem. The autofocus seems nice and fast, although I had problems focussing through some leaves even with single area selected. I haven't cross-tested this with the D70, though.
The shutter/mirror mechanism feels and sounds more solid than that of the D70.
The Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 is really nice, too and seems very sharp across the range.
Stupid SD card reader doesn't work on my work machine (W2K says Insert Disk into drive x) and the reference machine with XP says the drive isn't formatted, so I can't show you any photos. :o( They look rather nice on the big LCD, though.

Date: 4/10/06 02:14 pm (UTC)I'll just be miffed if it doesn't work on my desktop and especially the laptop, either. It's recognised as a USB Mass Storage Device and external drive but W2K says "insert a disk into drive" and WinXP claims it's not formatted. :o/

What size SD card?
Date: 4/10/06 03:40 pm (UTC)I have a couple of card readers around that, when you read the small print, are limited in the size of card they can actually handle.
I'm using a Dane-Elec USB 2.0 card reader here (I'd tell you the model but it's the in the middle of transferring 497 pictures from an xD card that I bought and used this weekend! OK done, it's the "Combo 9 in 4" reader) and it works fine on my work Win2K machine with SD, xD and MS Duo Pro (*without the adapter!*) and I've used it on my home machine with CF as well (I haven't tried SM in it since I've not used SM for years)
Because otherwise that sounds really weird as I have had no problems using my card reader with W2K and SD (1.0Gb)
