Lost musings after Season 2
27 Sep 2006 04:53 pm- So, if the button doesn't get pushed, the interior in the Swan gets magnetised and everything goes wrong. You can counteract this with a hidden key switch which (assumingly) generates a massive EMP discharge which *might* have caused the Lost flight to crash (would make sense as everything electric and electronic would have gone bye-bye, the actual feasibility of creating such an EMP nonwithstanding). The first incident (and subsequent EMP) mentioned in the Swan orientation video could have been the cause for the crash of Eko's brother's plane (and the arrival of the Others?).
- HTF did the military commander (played by Clancy "Brother Justin" Brown) from Sayid's Iraq flashback end up with Dharma and in the Swan?
- Henry (or whatever his name is) seems to be higher up in the hierarchy of the Others than we thought, as he tells the scary bloke with the (fake, why??) beard what to do.
- The last bit in the last episode proves that the outside world is still there and they just can't get off the island because they're prevented by mysterious/supernatural or highly complex technical means which probably also prevent the island from being spotted from the air or by sea. If "Henry"'s suggestion to Michael is true, there is a way to escape by going into a specific direction.
- Everything seems to point at the whole setup being sophisticated technical rather than supernatural/mysterious, which is cool.
It's a shame that Walt hasn't really featured much recently because in the beginning we thought he might be the key to the weirdness going on (and the black woman of the Others asked Michael if Walt had displayed any unusualy behaviour earlier in his childhood) so there might be a mysterious edge to everything, after all.
Remaining questions:
- what's the (long-term) purpose of the island, or rather what was it? If Dharma still wanted to use it, they'd look after it better. It seems it's either been abandoned or they somehow lost control of it and it's doing its own thing.
- who are the Others really and how did they end up on the island? Are they in any way connected to Dharma (previous occupants of the hatches) or just similar crash victims who landed there earlier (possibly during the first "incident").
- connected to the above who is "He" (the man in charge according to "Henry")?
- What was the cause for the main crash and was it deliberate or coincidence?
I hope the producers get on with it and continue to drive the story forward without drawing it out necessarily (there's not much more scope than for one full season, IMHO) so it doesn't go and dies horribly because it jumped the shark and ratings drop. Keep it up and finish it while it's still interesting and moving, I'd say.

Walt's behaviour on the boat was very odd - no interest in Jack et al at all.
Not scrolling upwards!

Date: 27/9/06 04:13 pm (UTC)Oh, and it was the EM generating 'system failure' that caused the plane crash (from not pressing the button), turning the key presumably disabled whatever the EM field was doing when the button was being pushed... (curing locke for example?)

Date: 27/9/06 04:44 pm (UTC)There's a theory that the island is underneath a forcefield/shield/whatever that not only prevents those on the island from leaving but also anybody on the outside seeing the island. Whatever pushing the button prevented caused the shield to collapse which meant the two blokes on the ship noticed it and the blast put everything back to normal. This most likely means we'll be seeing those two trying to find the location but failing unless the islanders find a way of ultimately destroying the "shield".

Date: 27/9/06 08:08 pm (UTC)-Wanna bet we have MUCHO flashbacks Season 3? We know Walt can make things appear out of nothing (electromagnetic energy?)(he reads the comic with the pink polar bear- the pink polar bear appears).
Dharam- they lost control; the 'fake website' suggests somehing went wrong.
Epic end of season 2.
Yummy!

Date: 27/9/06 09:21 pm (UTC)and if it isn't supernatural then all the coincidencies and connections had better be explained with something better than "life's wierd, eh".

Date: 28/9/06 07:26 am (UTC)2. Fake beards indicate living on the island without razors - hence for a long time. If you have your supply if Gilette Mach23 still all fresh, then you've not been there the many years they claim to have been (must have been at least 16). So where do they get their supplies from? They wanted to indicate they didn't get any

Date: 28/9/06 01:51 pm (UTC)Someone or something at Dharama still knows about the island - the supplies that where dropped in the first Lockdown when "Henry Gale" alledges to not push the button. We can of course now assume he did since we didn't have the weird EM effects in that one.
Desmond says he sailed due west. But ended up in the same place he started in. Assuming the Islands unique geological magnetic effects something odd is happening. bepending on the size of the effect that could also contirubute to Oceanic Airlines flight 815 being off course to start with, especially if the size of the effect may change, for example, if the button isn't pushed.
Going off in a certain bearing could work, since theres a definate magnetic effect which should in theory have closed loops. This would imply that he magnet poles lie in that direction. On the otherside of the island you should be able to escape by sailing in the opposite direction. Apart from the fact you wouldn't be able to set your bearing from the Earth's magnetic north, because the islands would be getting in the way. I wish I had done better at Electromag in my physics degree.
The lack of Walt is more due to the nature of filming and time rather than the plot of the series. The actor has aged 2 years and the character only 65 days. He's apparantly hit odd growth spurts and the like, as you do at that age so he's been more written out due to practicality, which is a shame.

Date: 28/9/06 02:15 pm (UTC)Good point about Walt. That's even trickier than Harry Potter as there's a year between books/films while in Lost it's continuous and in the Lost world only three months(?) have passed in two seasons.
They must be going through a lot of babies, too. :o)

Date: 30/9/06 03:15 am (UTC)I haven't worked out the timeline either - I'm sure that was Libby who gave her husband's boat to Desmond. Presumably this is before she ends up in the asylum with Hurley.
"Henry Gale" arrives by a small boat, having planned on capturing 3. They are obviously not leaving that way, so why go to the dock otherwise? It was also in excellent repair, compaired to every other installation on the island.
I hope the boat's compass still works after a massive EMP pulse - or the setting is still good.... "Henry" also seems different in behaviour to the rest, just standing there scowling.
