To those of you who travel by public transport, what is the best way of getting to somewhere "nice" by the seaside that isn't too far from Cambridge?
A colleague is looking into explring the area a bit more and looking for suggestions.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Depends on what you mean by "seaside". Great Yarmouth & Lowestoft are both about 1 hour and a half away, but I believe Grt Yarmouth at least has a beach of sorts.

Kings Lynn is closer, but is more of a port than a seaside town.

Or, if you're heading up Norfolk way, you could go to Cromer.

Clacton on Sea might be another possibility, but I haven't been there yet.

Well, somewhere nice by the sea so beach, promenade etc.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Clacton is good, and as far as I know you can get a train there.

Yes -- via changing at Colchester. Will probably take a good couple of hours though.

I think Felixstowe (change at Ipswich) is nicer. Then if you go via Norwich there are places like Sheringham (nice), Gt Yarmouth (not so nice) and Lowestoft (inbetween).

Hunstanton is do-able. Train to Kings Lyn, bus from there to Hunstanton. We had a lovely weekend up there by public transport a couple of years ago.

Learn to drive & buy a car?

That's the best way...

If that had been an option I wouldn't have asked, would I?

It's the best option. You didn't say you wanted anything else!

Happy to help!

I specifically stated public transport.

I do travel by public transport. You didn't specify that you wanted to, and the best thing to do with public transport is still not to use it!

And what exactly does "To those of you who travel by public transport, what is the best way..." mean, eh? I also said that a colleague wants to, not me. You might want to learn how to read before you make stupid comments.

It means what you say on the tin - 'those who use public transport, what is the best way to...'. I use public transport, but the best way to get where you asked would be not to, and to drive instead.

You don't specify that you want only public transport responses. Now, using something like 'Using public transport only, what is the best way to...' would work :)

It's facetious, I know, but it's meant light heartedly - my apologies if it's wound you up!

Sherinaghm gets my vote - 1.25 hrs by train cam-Norwich, and an hour Norwich to Sheringham - both are nice runs, however.

Aldeburgh's probably doable via Ipswich and/or Wickham Market, but you'd need bus timetables.

Hunstanton is eay - 45 mins train to King's Lynn, 30 mins bus to Hunny. Not a great place though. For more interesting coast (but not exactly seaside), the CoastHopper bus from Lynn to Cromer follows the A149 round the north Norfiolk coast. Wells-Next-the-Sea is the only seaside=y place there, but there are lots of nice villages (Brancaster, Burnham Market, Cley, and so on).

Hunstanton is great. You've got tacky seaside, magnificent geology and nice beaches just out of town, a sea life centre, and a boat trip (on a world war two duck followed by a catamaran, for pities sake!) to a sand bank smothered in seals. Great stuff.
