I really, really hope that this won't become permanent as I have no desire to leave my photography equipment and laptop in the clumsy and uncaring hands of the airport baggage handlers...
we all have to sacrifice a little of our liberties and freedom to prevent these evil terrorists from disruptin- oh, um, well, let's move on, please dont think about the actual risk vs reality, citizens...
I for one will not be letting my lenses and film out of my sight.
a journey caused not by a fear of terrorists, but by the disruption inflicted upon us by the governments and media who will scare-monger the reality in persuit of their own goals?
And resulting in a road journey that has risk of fatal accident easily an order of magitude greater than flight...
Won't last - too many passengers will demand compensation for damaged / stolen cameras, computers, etc. and the airlines won't be able to afford to pay for them - they'll pressure the security bods into a return to more normal service.
That's an useful site, thanks!. Hm, London-Frankfurt via Brussels takes 8 hours at £130, plus another 2 hours or so from Cambridge, plus transfer from Frankfurt Hbf to airport (another 30 mins or so). Only one change for the main journey, as it seems, plus the transfer to the airport. Not too horrible for a days journey and definitely shorter and less tiring than driving. About the same price as a flight from Stansted with a reasonable (rather than cheap) airline, too. A long transatlantic flight afterwards is probably not very comfortable, though. There might be an overnight stay needed.
I will have to look into that, if all else fails. Cheers!
Well, I went though yesterday, and the computer survived. Evidence is this post. Don't know about the camera though, suppose I ought tohaul it out and give it a whirl.
Good for you. Apart from stuff being thrown about, I'm also worried about it getting nicked. Travel insurance doesn't cover valuables in checked baggage...

I'm currently pondering the feasibility of driving to Frankfurt for my flight to Santiago and the Antarctic cruise in December...

As for delicate things; pack them inside a seperate cardboard box with a TON of bubblewrap around them or something.
