Matt Damon to play Kirk

If it's really supposed to be the Academy years, Damon is too old, anyway.

Kirk has to be a captain, surely. Cadet James T. Kirk is almolst as wrong as Admiral Kirk.

I hope that flimsy single hope isn't too fragile for two people to cling to...

Well the whole concept of doing another prequel smacks of total desperation to me.

No doubt it'll be a load of old monkey buttocks. Coz who could play Kirk other than The Shat??? No-one, that's who!

I think they should just stop making any Star Trek for a decade or two and put me out of my misery.

Instead of recasting people to play Kirk and Spock in "The Academy Years" it would probably be better to cast people as completely new characters, possibly set in the same time period if the people in charge or so hung up on making a prequel.

It's not that people don't want to see that kind of stuff, it's that fans don't want the past to be screwed up like what happened on Enterprise and non Star Trek fans want something easily accessible. It would make a lot more sense to follow a new crew from their Academy years onwards as they make a name for themselves (leaving it open for more money spinning sequels, because we all know that's what movie makers like). Afterall, however good the Enterprise crew were they couldn't have been holding the entire Federation together all by themselves.

This is the most sensible suggestion. Wasn't there a line of books that followed a different crew in the TNG timeline? Something like that.

yeah - Peter David did them - they were VERY good.

I just hate the whole prequel idea, and I don't see the reason for it. Unless it's to cash in on peoples' fond memories of the original Trek, but if what they did with Enterprise is anything to go by, it'll be nothing like it. So why bother?

They're just flogging a dead horse.

*horror*I'm still not over the entire Enterprise thing, let alone this.

then again there were rumours of this ilk surrounding the Crusher Brat pre-enterprise.

perhpas more rumour of wrongness?

Nope, not at all. It's a grab from "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" It's supposed to be a stalaktite he breaks off the ceiling but in the light, it just looks like a huge pink dildo...

Why can't they just do a movie with the guy who played Welsey Crusher, or the cast of Voyager? Those actors need a job...

Nooooooo to a Wesley Crusher film!
Voyager is back and the crew is broken, the story is told.

Dear gods, no! No more Wesley Crusher!

From: [identity profile] medivh-tirisfal.livejournal.com
Can't we just have a film where the bad guy's torture Wesley to death while the rest of the enterprise crew past and present do nothing about it? Except maybe ask for a recording of the process.

so, really what these studio executives are saying is something like....

the scene: large table with execs in suits
Exec 1:

well, we need a franchise that will sell, we need a name people will know, and the last money-raking cash-in went down like a $5 hooker, so will never sell a film...
a lightbulb flickers above another one's head
Exec 2:
Got it! let's ressurect the characters of a series from the 60's, let's give it huge amounts of CGI, completely rework the actors, and trust the buying public to fall for the title, like we've been selling them the last two decades... only this time, we get to use banners saying "kirk is back!
Exec 3: totting numbers into a calculator
He's onto something there. initial market figures suggest that it would immediately give us a profit
Exec 1:
Fantastic! Let's get to work right away. You! find a hack with no scruples to write a plot! You! start the PR machine rolling. You! Hide all evidence of creativity....

unfortunately I get the feeling you're not kidding...

Mind you, the idea for the movie is stupid anyway. I'd much prefer one centred around the Excelsior - maybe even with Robin Curtis on board...

The other alternative would be covering the time of the Enterprise C, i.e. somewhere between Khitomer and the start of TNG.

My choice would be a movie, doesn't matter on crew, set during the Dominion War.

Star Trek IX is NOT gonna be Star Trek IX.

It's gonna be Star Trek I.

New franchise.

The only REAL news worth quoting on it is this I feel...

Matt Damon (said in Team America voice) as Kirk ....... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Please God, ANY God NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

On the other hand, it might be actually quite good.
Judging it now when there's nothing more than rumour, a teaser poster, and very little else is really quite daft. Matt Damon isn't a terrible actor, he certainly.. cant.. be.. worse.. than Shitner!
