I'm watching the remake of Dark Water and there've been a few moments where she looks so much like Sarah 20 years ago, it's incredible. And yeah, she's the only reason I'm watching it. It sort of looks like the original but it's annoying me already because it's bland. The scene in the lift (with the caretaker watching on his monitor) is really creepy in the Japanese version but in this one, it's just Huh?

As is the case with Asian horror, the original is far far superior.

Not even a wet Jennifer Connelly helped much...

I think it's something to do with it being foreign. A lot of foreign films gain intellectual gravitas, or in this case horror, simply for putting the audience outside of their expectations. You can lazily watch an American horror film- you can let your eyes wander while you take in the language, the visual identifiers are keyed to your country (bad guys wear black hats etc). Foreign (and particularly Asian films) automatically put you in an uneasy place - you have to keep watching the film to keep track of the subtitles, drawing you into the film so that your eyes dont wander from the visuals so much. Different conventions in narrative, lighting etc means that some part of you isn't quite sure of what is going to happen.

Plot-wise the Jap-horror trend is often re-hashes of old American films, and the differences between them are not that grand (supernatural type watch a film/get a phone call/email then something will kill you replacing the more western slasher archetype). Some of the 'jump' moments work better as well because you're half concentrating on reading instead of paying attention to the obvious half-open door.

Translating this back to Hollywood tends to leave a rather bland, over-lit film that integrates the less than genius plot with expected western visuals.

That was a nice elaborate explanation. You should write a book or something. :o)
