I'm not sure that we really need reminding of our national identity right now. There's plenty of jingoism going around in the media here anyway. To be honest a bit less of it would be refreshing.
Um... but Engerlerrrnd won in '66, and 2006-1966 is 40, and ... O_o ... uh... oh yeah - Jesus spent 40 days and nights in the desert, so... um... so God is on England's side!
Or something. Who are you people, and where are my slippers?
Lets not forget in 4 years time Wales will be winning the World Cup. So that will mean that in 2010 Wales will have:
Bangor City holding the UEFA Champions League
Merthyr Tydfil Holding the English FA Cup
Wales holding the Rugby World cup
Newport holding the European Challenge cup
Cardiff holding the Heinekin cup
Celtic crusaders winning the super league
Along with all the Gold medals Wales will win at the Next Olympics.
Then we would just need Cornwall (Kernow) to have full Nation Status, instead of just ethical nation status (like Wales, Scotland Ireland - Though in practice for practical reasons Ireland has two nation status one for the counties of Ulster Making up Northern ireland, one for the Counties (including some Ulster Counties making up the republic) the de-facto annexation of Cornwall making it a part of England has never been codified. Then the true nations and teams would be able to compete in these competetions.
years in which Germany won the world cup: 1954, 1974 and 1990. The '90 final happened on the Sunday of our hometown's annual traditional funfair/beer festival. There was hardly anyone there so no queues for beer or food. Most of the seats in the shade were still available. It was bliss. And after the game, when all the football watchers came back, the breweries had a record turnover. ;o)
I am looking forward....

Re: I am looking forward....
Date: 9/6/06 04:07 pm (UTC)Anything that reminds Europeans of their national identities is something I'm very much in favor of; its the sort of good news that is all too rare.
....
Date: 9/6/06 04:41 pm (UTC)Then again, our respective opinion of what that constitutes are propably completely different, anyway.
