[livejournal.com profile] tooth_fairy's post about overfishing and endangered fish reminded me that I don't eat as much fish as I should. Considering I buy my meat from local butchers (who source their wares from reasonably local farms), I should really buy fish from independent shops, too.

Any recommendations gratefully received.

There was a thread on cam.misc about this, recently. From what I can remember, there's nothing in the city itself, apart from a guy who comes once a week (Monday?) with a van to the carpark at the Portland Arms and sells from there.

There's a fish stall on the market, not sure which days it's there though.

Ah yes, true. I'll have to trek out very early on a Saturday, then.

In my experience unfortunately the chap on the market is a miserable bastard so unless he has exactly what you want you might not be in for an easy time

Thanks for that warning. However, I would have gone with a "what's nice and good today" attitude rather than a specific idea in mind as I would like to expand my horizons a bit, too.

Following on to that thread, someone has posted to cam.misc advertising their new fish (and other things) shop near Cambridge:

http://www.saltandwoodsmoke.com/?cat=6

Reports from other cam.miscers who've been there suggest it's very good, and apparently they try to obtain sustainably-caught fish wherever possible.

(I wouldn't know personally whether it's good, since I don't eat fish!)

Thank you! I shall give that a try.

That sounded in my head like it was "Damn, those fishes are getting endangered! Better eat me one afore thays all gone!"

I should be spoilt as the Fish market in B'ham is excellent, but somehow I never manage to make it there :(

Heh, yes. The post also implied that I won't rush out to Tesco's or whereever and just buy their wares.

Some of the best fish & seafood I've had has been from supermarkets. Most of their stock is generally a bit average, though (unsurprisingly!).

I think this might be enough to motivate me to go into town tomorrow, with any luck. I think there's some scallops calling my name :D

Oh hell yes :)

I just hope to do them justice!

Although as I'll not be in till the afternoon it's a case of catch as catch can, ingredients wise...

Can you get fresh fish in Cambridge?

I used to eat a lot more fish when I was living in Plymouth and in Doncaster where you could actually get fresh fish.

Not-fresh fish is... Well, not worth cooking and certainly not worth eating raw.

Well, finding that out was the point of this post. :o)

*nods* Definitely. I will never forget that very plainy poached cod (just served with melted butter, parsley and potatoes) in Norway. The fish had been out of the water for about three hours before being cooked. The mackerels we had in Scotland were similar.
