Speaking of which, we'll be bottling up a 10-year-old single malt next year, if you're interested?

That sounds interesting, sign me up. How come you have whisky to bottle?

Dad and a few of his friends bought a hogshead each...

Each? Wow...
Erm, a hogshead is 286l (correct me if I'm wrong but that's what onlineconversion.com says), where do they keep that monster? That's like a lifetime supply of whisky...

Yes and no. The hogshead starts off full, at about 286l @ ~65% bv (I assume that volume is correct - sounds about right). Ten years later, if we bottle it at 40%, we'll get about 300x75cl bottles, due to losses. The "monster" lives in the distillery on a Scottish island that cannot be named for legal reasons(!)

As for whether it's a lifetime supply, let's assume you drink a bottle a day, you'll get 300 days worth of whisky, so yes, it's almost certainly a lifetime's supply... ;)

Ah, of course there will be some evaporation during 10 years of storage but 300 bottles is still a hell of a lot of whisky.
