This guy is a bit mad to do this but I guess you can if you really want to and can't afford a macro lens or even a macro ring yet...

Or go on ebay and get yourself some extension tubes.

Exactly. Then I'm sure they'll fit and there won't be any problems with light leaks, either.
Random fact: I'm actually currently bidding on a set of extension tubes which should get me started before I've saved up for the Sigma lens I've got my eyes on. :o)

Which Sigma are you after?

The 105mm f2.8 (http://www.sigma-imaging-uk.com/lenses/macro/105mm.htm)

The other option would be the Nikon Micro 60mm (http://www.europe-nikon.com/details.aspx?countryid=20&languageid=22&prodId=286&catId=124) but that's a bit beyond my budget.

I'll see how I get on with the extension tubes on my 50mm and then I'll see if I want to invest in a proper macro lens or go for a wide open wide-angle zoom instead.

The extra distance can be handy for lighting with a flash, but it does make it trickier if you try to handhold it (Which I've not tried yet, but suspect would be a disaster)

That's my concern, too, actually.
