Not convinced by Tom Hanks as Langdon or Audrey Tautou as Sophie but Jean Reno as Fache is spot on. Ian McKellen as Sir Leigh could work as well.

Ian McKellen could probably carry it off (hell, he could probably carry off anything!), but I'd imagined Sir Leigh as rather, err, larger.

I can't think of anyone else tbh, though!

How can Ian McKellen lower himself to being associated with such utter drivel? The Da Vinci Code may not be the worst book ever written but it's certainly the worst I've ever read. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's actually worse than his other books.

Have you tried them all too? I extend my sincere commiserations to you. [profile] the_mendicant has gobbled them up, and I'vetried a few in the vain hope of seeing if there was actually a spark of originality or decent writing in them. Alas!

Whereas is delighfully silly.

Charlie Higson (I say, Ted!) Teabing was supposed to be the same age as Langdon, not a venerable elder.

Jean Reno, yes.
Audrey Tautou, Maybe, I don't actually know who she is.

Forest Gump Tom Hanks, No no no no NO!

Audrey Tautou played Amélie.

Almost anything with Jean Reno in it is automatically superb in my book.

As for McKellen lowering himself, he's guesting in 'Coronation Street'! Yeuk.

I've read them all, to my shame. It became a matter of morbid fascination... could they actually be this terrible?

Yes, they are.

Do you think he is one man or actually a computer experiment that has been unleashed on the publishing world. Surely a real writer/publisher would never write in such a formulaic way?

Oh that's just horrible! He's the only one from LOTR that in my head remained un-slashed :o)

Which is quite hilarious because he's a well-known face on the 'scene' and likes young men to call him Serena McKellen.

*nods*

Ian Mckellan could probably pull anything off, IMO, but I do agree he is not Sir Liegh as described int he book... but then, when has that stopped film adaptations?

Nah, it isn't so bad.

Da Vinci code is a generic Robert Ludlum/Eric Lustbader style airport lounge thriller for people who are too tired to think.

Just replace Opus Dei with clandestine Nazi's infiltrating Europe/America/wherever & the 'Grail' with secret plans for world domination by cloned Hitlers or businessmen/politicians secretly adhering to fascism and you're away :)

But it was all their fault :o)

Given that films are usually worse than the book, and that the book was unmitigated tripe, I really don't see the appeal...

I have only had the misfortune of reading 'Demons & Angels' and the 'Da Vinci Code'- however, I thought the description in The Times, that "...the Da Vinci Code makes Jeffrey Archer sound like Flaubert..." was perfectly apt :)

I saw it twice and the first time it was dubbed in polish, which made it all the more bizarre :o)

Before I saw it though it never occurred to me that Jean Reno would do comedy :o)

Oh no no, it's nothing like that - I usually am quite well behaved....

But come on - 4 hobbits who *always* seek adventure together - that was just asking for it!

Reno did The Visitors, that was a comedy, and a superb one at that.

Coming back to McKellen, have you ever heard the Discworld song "A Wizard's Staff Has A Knob on the End"? ;oP

Ozzy dear, you know I'm very fond of you right?

So you'll know just how hard it will be for me to *kill you* :oP

You give me no choice - first you ruin McKellen for me with his *knob* and now the hobbits - well more specifically Elijah whom I always considered impartial to hobbit debauchery....
