Was the first there so chatted to surje and casilda about the US and other things. By 8, nobody else had turned up so we decided to start, when as if on cue davefish appeared.

First was Dark Water (subtitled), a low-key but still scary in a psychological thriller way horror film. The story of a divorced mother fighting for the custody of her little daughter. When they move into their new apartment, strange things start happening, and both start behaving oddly. It gets worse when a wet spot appears on the bedroom ceiling...
There's a Hollywood remake in the works but considering what happened to Ring, this won't be any good.

The second film on offer was Versus (again subtitled but slightly more awkwardly). This one was a gory shocker and the closest thing to a live-action anime I've ever seen. The character stereotypes and their mannerisms, the styling of clothing, hair, weapons etc., the camera work and the dialogue were all very anime, just shot on film at real locations. Two escaped convicts are met by a gang of thugs who want one of them. Violence erupts, people die but don't stay dead because they are in the Forest of Resurrection where there is supposed to be a gate to the other side... Very gory and violent, very overdrawn, funny in many places, with big guns and swords, a perfect movie for a lazy evening.

Hey, I liked the American Ring! I'm seeing the sequel tonight, in fact. Plus, the remake of Dark Water has Jennifer Connelly in it. Getting her shirt wet! How could you not see the appeal? (I liked the original, by the way. It was spooky without being scary.)

I'd like to recommend The Returner which is a Japanese sci-fi movie. Fun, and surprisingly good. It's not very gory, though.

Jennifer Connelly in a wet shirt is probably the only appeal the remake could have for me... ;o)

My favourite character in Versus is the psyco nut-job (the guy in the suit). He was absolutley fantastic!
