While listening to "It Always Will Be", Willie Nelson's wonderful new album, I realized that only two of the Highwaymen project have survived (saw them in Munich on their tour and got an autograph from Willie, need to find that over Christmas). Waylon Jennings died in 2002, Johnny Cash last year but Ol' Willie is still going strong (Kristofferson seems to concentrate on his movie career instead).
The new album is mostly quiet, thoughtful and typical of the later Willie. His music has always been a bit outside the mainstream but he's moved from Outlaw Country to Americana, much like Steve Earle. There are several wonderful duets with Paula Nelson, Norah Jones (no idea why that got bad reviews) and one with Lucinda Williams called "Overtime" which I'm most likely going to play at the next Octaine (that or any other song on the album, really).
*takes off hat to Willie Nelson*
