Chav Towns

The Cambridge entry is quite good.

Most of the definitions of "chav" in the Urban Dictionary are pretty accurate as well.

The Romford entry is SOOOO right-on. The town itself suffers from chav-ism, not just the inhabitants. Tearing away tradition to replace it with a soulless, mass-produced standardised look.

They stuck a roof over the town centre, for instance. Question is, does it keep the dirt out or just keep it locked in?

Burntwood, Chasetown and Brownhills are all given fairly significant mentions, which is a source of amusement as they are all tiny segments of my home town. I do remember that there was an amount of chav segregation (They were referred to as 'Bastards' to us, though, and I believed they referred to anyone vaguely alternative as a 'Goon'.) I didn't realise it was quite as apartheid as is seems to be now.
Thank God I moved here, and work in the Graaaaaaaafton!

The thought of 'chav towns' fills me with dread. Unfortunately in the July archive there is an article for St. Neots... And whilst not in depth it certainly speaks the truth.

Just what happened to the Boat Race which used to be the alternative live venue in Cambridge for smaller crowds (300 capacity, I think) and now it's "The Vine" another faceless, shiny, townie-filled "Bar&Grill"...
I'll post some before and after pictures at one point if I can bring myself to actually take a photo of the new thing.

Thankfully, Cambridge has the colleges who own large chunks of the city so the centre will hopefully remain what it is.

Hehe, that's fantastic! So accurate!
The boatrace was still shut last time I saw it, I didn't realise it had opened again as anything. Ick.
