I had completely ignored the ads in the sidebar but [livejournal.com profile] susanofstohelit remarked how the ads were targeted according to the content of the current mail.
This is a bit scary, actually...

Not always. Notable lack of ads when I received a couple of messages related to someone's funeral.

But the whole point of the gmail service is the targeted ads. The fact that once in a while someone will follow one is paying for the whole damn thing. For now, anyway, until their shareholders get greedy...

Well yeah. That's the point. It's the exact same software as they use on normal Google searches.

that's the great thing about the way they're doing it. on yahoo or hotmail or whatever, the ads are bright colors and blinking or moving. much harder to ignore.
