This wonderful new box of mine has no switch on the PSU, how do I switch it off completely?

Unplug it.

Seriously.

I still have my reservations regarding the switchless PSU's

hold down the power button for about eight seconds

That was my first attempt but it will only switch on again.

After I shut down Windows, the motherboard still has power.

Seems to be the only way. It's what I did when I installed things bit by bit, anyway.

With the Wake On Lan or Wake On Dial functionality of most of the new motherboards today, the only way to make sure you power it off it to either unplug it or flip the switch on the Surge protector bar that you have it pluged into.

Turn off every power-restore, standby, wake-on-[insert anything here] functionality you can find in windows and BIOS. Might just do it.

If not, there's either a) pull plug/turn off at the wall, or b) wire up your own power switch. Personally, I'd recommend the former (but would be far more likely to attempt the latter ;-) )

I can't turn it off at the wall as it's in a multiplug thingie so pulling the plug it is.

The m/b is designed to have standby power. It's harmless; I wouldn't worry about it...

I do - wouldn't put it past someone to write a trojan that reprograms the bios to boot up at 3AM and start dialling premium numbers or something. Plus leaving a PC connected to the mains 24/7 isn't particularly eco-friendly and removes a good defence against voltage spikes. I always switch off at the mains socket.

I'm with Marcus here. I switch my computer off when I don't need it and I want it to be completely off.

Do you do the same with your TV? Your video?

I'm not saying it's completely pointless, but I think the risks are minimal.

But then, I have four PCs that run continuously 24/7 :-)

It's not about risks, it's about energy consumption.
