For a simplistic but effective demonstration of what happens when a jet plane flies into a cloud of volcanic dust, watch last night's episode of Bang Goes the Theory.

How to pronounce the name of the Volcano God properly:

There are many sounds that there are no English equivalent for! Hell, I struggle with certain German sounds, I'm not even trying Icelandic.

Funny how language has evolved, hasn't it? Icelandic is the modern language that's closest to Old English which again had its roots in Norse. Just shows that modern English isn't the same language that's merely evolved but a conglomeration of all the languages that have invaded.

I don't really know much about Old English. I suppose the closest today is possibly Dutch or German? It would be interesting to hear the old pronunciations, because I can't relate those letters to those noises! Eyjafjallajokull sounds like Evalerwick!

Then I saw this one and the pronunciation is completely different!

There aren't really any modern European languages that are closer, with the exception of some old Dutch/German (Frisian) dialects.
[livejournal.com profile] vyvyan could explain this better than I can, he's the expert linguist.

Hm, the only difference between the video above and the two you just posted is that the other two draw it out to make it clearer while the first speaks a lot faster (as Icelanders do, it's quite scary). There are some really long names that are a lot shorter when spoken.
