Wildlife photographer stripped of award

I never really liked the shot because it just felt unnatural. I'm not a wolf expert but I'm not sure they would jump over a gate like that out of their own volition.
I also rarely like the use of flash in wildlife shots because it's against the whole "documenting animals in their natural habitat" idea.

Wow. I was wondering what the outcome of this would be. It's kind of embarrassing that his photo is all over merchendise.

just posted my own thoughts on it.

I wasn't too impressed with last year's, either. Yes, it was an image of an extremely rarely documented animal but photographically, it was uninspiring, despite the technical setup behind it.

The snow leopard? Yeah, there was way too much noise in that pic.

Unsurprising. It was a dramatic picture, but far too good to be true.

Still, good to see that they have principles!

How do you feel about the use of underwater lighting or lighting in a cave? I mean, presumably to see these animals one must illuminate them somehow...and similarly for an animal that is active at night one must use some form of lighting.

I actually have no issue with flash/lighting because without it often the image would not be captured at all. Obviously I would prefer 'as natural as possible' but where not possible, I'd rather see, say a wolf, captured in flash than not at all.

I've seen images of bats in flight where a brilliant image has been captured via the most elaborate of setups, flash, hi speed cameras, radar traps etc and they are just as brilliant as a naturally lit scene, in fact they are sometimes better, offering a hyper real shot that would otherwise be invisible to the naked eye. To see a flying animal shot on hi speed cameras, esp moving images, is often richly rewarding, even if not entirely natural.

It depends on the situation, I guess. I would rather gradually introduce constant lighting.

I seriously wouldn't want to shoot a wild wolf with flash as I'd have no idea how it would react (most likely scarper but who knows).

It's not really easy to answer and actually something I wanted to ask Mark Carwardine at the Last Chance to See talk (because he used flash quite often) but he had swine flu that night.

Well in that situation, if it wasn't faked, I presume the flash would be triggered by sensor. I can only assume it no worse really than a flash of lightning.

One thing I do often wonder about is what effect introducing flood lighting does to fish who have highly sensitive eyesight at depth. One presumes they don't feel pain or would quickly leave but does it have any lasting damage? I can only compare it to a human staring at the sun.

On a related topic, you're entering this year, right?

I don't have anything new, though.

I really don't know so would resort to low light technologies. For example, the night sequences in the Natural World programme about leopards last night were all shot in infrared.

Right. Back from Work (http://karohemd.deviantart.com/art/Back-from-work-45750739) it is, then. Thank you!

Which category do you think would fit better, "Animals in their Environment" or "Animal Portraits"?
"Behaviour: Birds" doesn't fit, imo, as there isn't enough action. If I had a clear and big shot of gentoos hunting, that would be ideal.

I'd go for animal portraits.

*nods* Yeah, because it's a real character. Thank you.

I was a bit dubious as to why a wolf would jump over that gate instead of walking through the holes, but thought it might just be really happy.
