motodraconis recently found an old and wonderfully illustrated book called The Public and Private Life of Animals. Click the link to her flickr set with a selection of photos of some of the pages (all the photos should be viewable large). Some of those could well have inspired Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. Very impressive.

I'm all up for simplifying spelling (good examples of spelling reforms: Norwegian, Danish and Dutch, bad example: German) but allowing variations only leads to even more confusion.
