[Gigs] Von Wegen
23 May 2008 12:15 pm(edited a few times with extra links etc.)
The Neubauten gig last night was fantastic.
I got there early so had to wait half an hour before the doors opened but I had a book so that wasn't too bad. Once inside I managed to get a spot right at the front opposite where Alex Hacke would end up playing and next to a cute Northern Irish redhead who had flown in from Belfast so I had someone to chat, too.
It started with Otto von Schirach, a madman doing a mix of noise and random electronic gubbins and incoherent screaming into the microphone (he seems to be described as doing IDM and breakcore but it was a lot wilder than that). Mad, weird but not bad at all.
Followed by another electronics act from Bejing called White (can't find a link atm), a man and a woman doing odd things with synths, guitars and various electronic gadgets. Cool stuff, indeed.
Thank you to
squirmelia for the names of the support acts.
After another stage change and a bit of a wait, the Neubauten came on just after 9 and they played for over 2 hours (with a five minute or so break in between). Lots of material from Alles wieder offen with a smattering of older stuff. The quiet songs worked really well, too but obviously the great stuff to watch was when they pulled all the stops and beat the crap out of various bits of, well, scrap. Fantastic sound, too, but I guess that's what you can expect when you're dealing with perfectionists.
They also did a fun improvised a bit. Every band member drew three cards with various keywords from a bag, they discussed stuff briefly and then just went for it. After the track, they explained what the various bits had been. Great idea.
I regretted not having taken my small camera because the light was fantastic. Quite bright, nicely spread and mostly white. Bum.
As it was past 11, there was no chance I could catch any but the last train back so wandered back to the tube where I ran into
daevid and
dmh and a girl called Liz (I think). We hung around Kings Cross a little longer and chatted about stuff until I headed off to catch my train. I just managed to get a seat on the SLOW train but Elric passed the time and as the seats cleared, it was a bit more comfortable, too. Was home before 2 but didn't get to bed before 3 because I was still wired from the gig.
Oh,
dmh, this is the photographer I was talking about (NSFW link), and you might want to look at this page specifically.
