An enjoyable afternoon
30 Oct 2005 05:26 pmMet up with
casilda and
surje at the Picturehouse to watch Corpse Bride which was very good indeed. It's a lot lighter in tone than Nightmare Before Christmas but the humour is nicely subtle which put a constant smile on my face with only the occasional giggle (especially the Bride's story song downstairs). As
surje mentioned afterwards, the use of colour was quite superb, too. Go and see it.
On my way home, I felt a bit peckish (only had breakfast) so I tried Hakka, the new Chinese restaurant at the bottom of Milton Road (where the Ying-Wah noodle bar used to be). It being 5pm, I was the only guest and the food arrived very quickly indeed. A good way of judging a restaurant is "difficult" seafood so I had scallops in black bean and chilli sauce. The scallops were done to the spot, nice and juicy, neither rubbery nor tough so full marks on texture. The black bean sauce was a bit bland, IMHO, and there wasn't any chilli I could taste but the combination of spring onion and ginger still made the dish quite tasty. The portion was quite small so for a full dinner, I definitely recommend having a starter. At £9.50 (plus plain boiled rice at 2.00) the price was just about justified considering the very fresh tasting scallops.
In short, no comparison to the Peking (both in taste and value for money) but good for a quick dinner. You'd be expected to pay about a fiver more for a similar dish at the Peking but the portions are almost twice the size and the taste is far superior.
