26 Aug 2002 01:32 pmJust finished part one of the book and I must say I'm very impressed.
It's got atmosphere, intrigue, interesting characters and a number of cool concepts (like the dæmons). Lyra's world is just like ours but different (as the intro says). It's a bit like steampunk but later, so maybe more electropunk ;o) with a bit of magic thrown in.
I also like the way Pullman uses language and makes it easily recognisable what kind of character is speaking or names and describes things. The Chthonic (I hate this word) Railway, for example, for the London Underground, combustion engines run on coal-spirits, etc.
The storyline has had so many twists and turns already that I'm sure it'll fascinate me for a long time.
Addendum
While surfing the net for some background info, I found out that the book is actually called "The Golden Compass" in the US. That's just stupid. I assume it refers to the Alethiometer, but that is made of brass.
Funny thing is, the US cover has some northern landscape on the cover and the UK edition has the Alethiometer...

So after a long night's sleep, nice breakfast and a long shower I was off to
robinbloke's with
jasonooc and
kinkykay to
andrewdavies' surprise bday party.
I had the choc mousse, Dippadoom, marinated pork steaks and assorted snacks, plus Zombies!!! the board game incl. expansion and Bag o' Zombies for Andy (shared present with Robin).
Got there, and marvelled at Labyrinth running on Robin's new sound system.
lanfykins and
clawboy42 turned up as well.
Andy and
zenmeisterin turned up and Andy was greeted in the appropriate way. He seemed genuinely moved and liked the presents - objective achieved ;o).
jonnyargles and Mel turned up as well which was cool.
The mousse was well received as well so I'm chuffed with that. I also know how to improve it, I need more egg whites to make it fluffier and have to use proper whipping cream (I only had stupid Elmlea after I had forgotten the cream and the minimarket around the corner didn't have any cream).
We spent the time eating and drinking, watching movies (Nightmare Before Christmas, The Matrix and Men In Black) and chatting. Was a very good way to spend a Bank Holiday.
