The Rising
29 Jul 2002 03:17 pmI've been listening to the new Springsteen album on repeat for the last 4 hours or so and I must say I like it a lot.
It's modern Springsteen but you notice the drive of the full complement of the E Street Band behind it.
There's a good mix of powerful full band songs and haunting quiet ones. The influence of the events of 11th September is quite apparent (all of the songs were written after).
It's not quite classic Springsteen but thankfully far away from the likes of Streets of Philadelphia and Human Touch, at least music wise.
Haven't decided on a favourite title yet, but Further on up the Road, Mary's Place and Lonesome Day are up there. Worlds Apart is quite unusual but also really good.
Hopefully I'll be able to get hold of tickets when he comes over here on the next tour.
I've seen him twice so far:
In 1989 in Munich (Tunnel of Love Tour) which was very very good. E Street Band with Nils Lofgren instead of Little Steven and a horn section. Over 3 hours of classics and some bits from ToL. It's amazing when a small stadium full of people sing the first verse of Hungry Heart, or do the whoop in Glory Days perfectly in time. Bobby Jean so got to me that I almost cried during the sax solo. It was really really amazing.
The second time was in Frankfurt on the Human Touch tour. Crap band, no sax, audience that didn't know any of the older songs. I felt stupid standing in a group of kids who thought I was mad when I sang along to the first verse to Hungry Heart. The only really good parts were the acoustic sets (Born to Run, Growing Up, etc.). It was worth the money but still no comparison to the '89 gig.
I had wanted to go to the Born in the USA gig in Munich in '85 but my parents refused to drive me down there. :o(
Now I'm just waiting for
borusa to post his expert opinion ;o)
