This just came up at work for some reason.

[Poll #1479849]

Note: This is mainly targeted at people around my age, i.e. those who actually remember what a black and white TV looked like and what it was like to actually having to get up and switch manually between the three available channels.

I would be able to answer all these questions if they were about the VCR! ^^

You had a black&white VCR? That's hardcore.

Haha! Technically we had a toploader, does that count as the same? :3

We had a betamax toploader before we got a VHS. In fact at one point we had two betas. I think my parents still have a working one of them.

I'd have to ask my Mom and Dad what year they got a TV before I was born. My family has always been into the latest electronic bits and gadgets so though we had one black and white TV hanging out in another room, I mostly remember watching the gigantoid color tv with wood frame.

I didn't count having my "first own TV" as the hand me down that was in my room when I was a teenager. lol

I can't remember. Maybe I am too old.

I do remember the first time I ever saw a colour TV. I was collecting money for a charity door to door (which is something we used to do at school) and someone had a colour TV and it was..... interesting. I think that was around 1971.

Three channels? That was a lot, I remember when there was less.

I had my own TV in the year 2002-2003

All of them public. ARD, ZDF and the regional channel (part of ARD but on a separate channel).

My Dad is a Luddite and still has wind up gramophones and wirelesses with valves, not to mention wind up clocks and treadle lathes.
I bought my first one in about 1995 but I've had a telly someone gave to me since I moved to Utrecht when I was about 20.
My Dad used to get loads of crap from the licence people who didn't believe he still had a black and white telly well into the 1990s.

Oh dear.
Does he generate his own electricity with that treadle? ;o)

My parents are hardly tech-savvy (despite my dad being an engineer but he's a mechanical engineer and can't get his head around electronics, unlike his brother who built his first radio when he was 12) but they do reasonably keep up with technology.

He is well and truly a member of the early 20th Century. He relies on his own power as much as possible. I think it's more an underlying distrust of just about everything actually. I think it's a shame really, he's keeping himself back from lots of things he'd love. Even his science fiction is positively 20th Century.

I remember my mother being very cross when I got home from school and didn't notice it was now in colour. We had redifusion cable in at least one house (due to crap local reception), which had a rotary selector dial on the wall, by my chair - almost a remote. I was dead impressed in 1982 when I encountered a wire-connected cable set in the states.

My first TV was a second-hand colour to use with my VIC-20, which stayed at home. When I was at college, I had a tiny black & white set. When I took the colour TV to my first flat in 1983, my remote was a 6-foot bamboo pole with a rubber foot, to press the buttons!

You win with the 6 foot pole. ;)

However, my father's parents bought the first TV in their street in the early 1950s, and everyone in the street came to their house to watch the coronation :-)
