OK, but why has he drawn the guy in the middle's sister/alter ego?

The hair is the bit that gets me.

It looks unbelievable but it was linked from the strobist feed, not just a random find.

I keep looking at it and looking at it and all I see is photo.

Either it's fake or really is that amazingly awesome!

Assuming it's totally on the level... that's just fucking incredible. Even knowing, I cannot see through it. He's got to have cloned a lot of those textures from other photos though, surely! I just can't believe someone could draw every last detail so convincingly, and have it work as a whole as well as it does.

Talented bastard!

It looks to me (/Ben) like it's a physically airbrushed painting, rather than a photoshop creation...?

I miss using airbrushes. they're a wonderful tool for photorealists.

utterly obsolete in the digital age, alas. :/
mine mostly gather dust nowadays...

real shame.

but there are no clone controls in reality....

(I say, having earlier been doing linework for design work, only to have the ruler slip as I drew a line... and my first thought was "bugger, undo-oh, hell, it's not digital, is it...")

Wish there were.

Yeah, right. It may not be a straight photo...

Bloody hell, I was thinking it had been done in Photoshop, but you're quite right, he [allegedly] painted it. That's even more sickeni... I mean impressive!

Yes, I used to have great fun with my old airbrush back in my painting jackets and motorbikes days. I never really went in for photorealism though, impressive as it is to look at. After the invention of the camera it always seemed like a lot of hard work for something that could be achieved much more easily another way.

I wouldn't say that airbrushes are obsolete though. Were I to finish off the half-completed denim jacket that's been in my wardrobe for the last 8 years, I wouldn't be reaching for Photoshop to help me.

ah, so its painted with an airbrush, as opposed to created on photoshop? either is amazing- but i found the photoshop idea very unbelievable -if its legit- thats very awesome!

Hmmmm. My initial thought is that it is a photo and the "step by step" thing is shown in reverse.

If I'm wrong, then it's a very impressive piece of work!

Mind you, I can't really see the point of going to all that effort to make a painting that looks like a photo. just take a photo, it's quicker! LOL

Impressive.. but pointless.

Why as an artist would you choose to spend days of your life recreating something that is indistinguishable from a mechanical process?

Just for the wow factor, I guess? :) Also it's not something many people can do (I suck at realism anyway, even with line drawing!) so that's also something.

I agree it's not really a skill very applicable to daily life though, I bet he has a more "mundane" dayjob XD
