Dad
Dad

I can't even phone him because he's on a cruise ship somewhere on his way to a hiking holiday on the Canary Islands. The photo is a few years old but he doesn't look much different now. I really need to convince my parents to sit for a couple of portraits this summer.

Thanks, I really like it, too. It was a spontaneous "Hey Dad, look here" moment, shot with the 50mm f1.4 on the D70. He was still in his DIY outfit, hence the horrible green shirt.

oh, BTW! I intend to buy a flash for my Canon - I havent ever bought one before, but I realise its pretty essential if I wanna take photos at events, as the lighting in the museums where i've been practising has resulted in bad photos :(
I intend to go through my lighting books this week to find out which one would be a good one to start with, but wondered what you would reccomend? I asume theres lots of different types you can get - i was thinking maybe a fill flash would be what im looking for- but to be honest im not really sure as i've not looked into it. I need a flash i can fix onto my camera, that will prevent areas further back from being dark (does that make sense?) as in - create more even lighting.

Sorry, I know basically nothing about Canon (compatible) gear, you need to ask someone like [livejournal.com profile] davefish so I can't recommend anything.

You'll be looking at a "flashgun". As always, Canon products will be more expensive but Sigma (and others) do Canon compatible flashes, too (e.g. http://www.sigmaphoto.com/flashes/flashes_flashes_details.asp?id=3257).

As I don't know how Canons work, I can't tell you the options you're going to have, sorry. All I know is that Canon users lose out as their flash system doesn't come with a wireless trigger option as standard so if you want off-camera flash to simulate studio lighting, you're screwed (or have to shell out loads of money for radio triggers).

Sorry.

Flashgun is the generic term, speedlite is what Canon calls their flashguns. :o)
