My new laptop has arrived. I'd shopped around a bit and really liked the acers so I have one now. Funnily enough, this has now more power than my desktop PC so I think that will need an upgrade sometime this year as well.

Also, only a few years ago, a laptop with similar spec to a desktop machine would be considerably more expensive. My first laptop was around £700 for a low/mid spec at the time, this one has a DualCore processor, 4GB of RAM, dedicated graphics, 250GB HD and various bells and whistles and cost 450.

Yes it's an odd thing, the march of technology. I recently bought myself one of those little Linux palmtops for £130 and it has a faster CPU, larger hard drive and same amount of RAM (128mb) as my first desktop (which cost over £300 at the time).

I have no need for a full size laptop but fancied some sort of mobile device, and this thing is cheaper than a decent PDA phone or Blackberry and has a proper keyboard!

I recently bought a laptop and it struck me that though it is possible to get a decent deal, there are a couple of things that do seem to push the price right up - the size of the screen and the graphics card. I wanted to get a 17" screen and a non-Intel graphics chip in mine and therefore couldn't find much under about £700...

Of course it didn't help that I bunged a bunch of extras on it as well :)

I couldn't have anything bigger than 15.4" so it can fit in my bag. I guess there would have been slimmer and lighter models with the same performance but those are usually very pricey.
